let me just see if i have this right now... quixote has become quixotic (although, that's really not the implication, which is that quixotic is/was derived from quixote, as in don quixote... which i believe it actually was.

quixote was pronounces in it's native tougne as kee-owh-te.
The the english then made a word that is descriptive of the behavior of this near-folk tale hero and they spelled it quixotic.
Rather than pronouncing this word as kee-oh-tic the OED describes the pronunciation as ( Brit. /kwkstk/, U.S. /kwksdk/ ) which complletely ignores the name of the original person.
Charly argues that this is because it can not be a proper adjective, however... what is up with
(vgnrn) then, which honors the pronunciation of the high german? Or jungian which is (jṳŋiễn)(had to borrow some accents, the OG can't be represented in ascII).
So WTF is up with the imperialist manifest destiny that totally messes with our poor old man from La Mancha who had a far greater insight on the true inner workings of the world than either Jung or Wagner... both of whom had the same idea of the world but were too chicken shit to take on the things they saw and knew head on as our noble Don did?

the spanish pronunciation of "qu" equivalent of "kee"... (i'm using ellipsis because my comma key broke) which is the regional origin of the name.
if the personal pronoun has been adopted into english as an abstract concept then it loses it's signification of the personal and now signifies an idea and by"proper" english pronunciation of "qu" as "cue" is acceptable. proliferation of the pronunciation "kee" is purely vestigial.
manifest destiny is an american concept. the english language was not born of american soil or ideals and is hardly the first language to become la lingua franca.

i don't take jung too seriously for language. i don't take anyone too seriously when it comes to linguistics. i also don't put too much stock into anyone (la mancha included) who is known to the inner workings of the world. /black-hearted existentialism.

Jung was a magicia.. er... psychologist... not a linguist... hyakawa is a linguist... i was just pointing out that we respect the jungian spelling...
